Scoldilocks

Millions of middle-class drinkers putting health at risk with evening tipple

This suggests they do not believe they are drinking too much and that simply having a large glass or two of wine each evening is an acceptable way to unwind after a stressful day at work.
I bet history will prove the millions right and the Cassandras wrong.

I also drink to Obama who - I wager - might agree over a ciggie and a sharpener at the end of a hard day.

Prodnose: Tobacco, booze and now gambling?
Myself: I may be drunk but in the morning I will be sober and you will still be ugly.

Did you know that the bill for a celebration party for the 55 drafters of the US Constitution was for 54 bottles of Madeira, 60 bottles of claret, 8 bottles of whiskey, 22 bottles of port, 8 bottles of hard cider, 12 beers and seven bowls of alcohol punch large enough that "ducks could swim in them?"

In politics, as in life, a little alcohol can go a long way.

Melvyn Bragg continues the theme:

"I don’t know why but I’m always rather relieved and impressed when I come across the very great writers who liked a drink. One of the reasons that Swift gave for staying in Ireland for so long and returning to England only twice in his self-imposed exile, was that the price of wine in England was far too dear. When he went visiting in Ireland he would send his own wine on before him. The cover story was that he wanted to treat his host. The real story seems to have been that he wanted to make sure there was plenty for him to drink when he got there. That combination of precise, logical, utterly lean prose and, I
presume, a steady portion of hangovers is something to be regarded with awe. Or maybe there’s a connection between wine and the literary voice? After all, we could take it back to Plato and so many examples from the 5th century BC to today."
