In one era, out the other

Today, "a new era in entertainment begins where all your entertainment is together in one place - your games, movies, TV shows, music and sports," says Don Mattrick, president of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft. "With this update, Xbox 360 system owners will experience Kinect voice control integrated with Bing search, making your TV and entertainment experiences more social and personal than ever."

I'm intrigued. The Bomber already prefers to buy movies from Zune and store them on his XBox rather than collecting DVDs and he was looking for TV shows on it this weekend only to be disappointed.

As he was browsing films I noticed that The Tree of Life was available. It struck me that, now that we've got a new 40" TV that takes HDMI while we still haven't upgraded to a Blu-ray player, using the XBox is the only way I could watch the new Terence Malick in high definition.

It will be interesting to see if we go from DVD to online and by pass HD discs altogether. LoveFilm is on the XBOX from today. That might make a subscription attractive. Could I even end up with a 360 of my own.
