Miss the Memo?

The word 'meme' is a shortening (modeled on 'gene') of 'mimeme' (from Ancient Greek μίμημα Greek pronunciation: [míːmɛːma] mīmēma, "something imitated", from μιμεῖσθαι mimeisthai, "to imitate", from μῖμος mimos "mime") and it was coined by the British evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins in The Selfish Gene (1976).

Ugly a neologism as it is, Facebook have seen fit to compound it into Memology in "a look at what people were talking about on Facebook in 2011."

The Royal Wedding was the year's number one 2011 topic on facebook in the UK.

Before we get carried away, Megan (I'm not trying to take Cate Blanchett down) Fox is the number one in Actors and TV personalities with Vin Diesel at number two, and Verne Troyer is the result of someone feeding Vin Diesel after midnight.
